"Lights of Hope"

Downtown, Daegu
If you haven't already, check out these extravagant lights in downtown's National Debt Repayment Park (details below).  Lasting until after Lunar New Year, a few weeks remain to enjoy this dazzling display.

Take a stroll down this 253-meter Tunnel of Lights.  It's seizure-inducing fun for the whole family!  While effective at diagnosing epilepsy, the display is mainly designed to entice North Korean defectors (like this strategically-placed Christmas Tree).

Most importantly, it's absolutely fabulous for taking pictures of yourself.

Next, peruse the random assortment of well-lit creatures and foodstuffs.

Or help yourself to some unobtainium.

And finally, check out the towering blue horse.  Clearly this celebrates the Franz Marc painting of the same name.  Either that or the Chinese Zodiac symbol for 2014, hard to tell.

Location
On a serious note, the lights are located along the northeastern edges of National Debt Repayment Memorial Park (국채보상운동 기념공원), a memorial to tougher times in Korea's past.

In 1907, the newly-declared Korean Empire was struggling between aggressive neighbors armed with the most devastating weapon of conquest: bank loans.  The response of several prominent Daeguites was the National Debt Repayment Movement (국채보상운동), where they called on fellow citizens to donate funds in the name of protecting national sovereignty[1].  The Movement was ultimately squashed by Japan's colonial ambitions, but not before it became a popular expression of Korean nationalism and independence.  Daegu City built and dedicated this park in 1998, while Korea was overcoming its IMF Crisis.

I think that's why these lights were dubbed "Lights of Hope" by Daegu's mayor.

Walking about of the Novotel or the CGV building, turn left and the National Debt Park is a few blocks down the main road  (It's past the 2.28 Park... not the same park).  It's bordered by other landmarks, with Jonggak Intersection (종각네거리) on its northeast corner, Kyungpook Medical School (경북대학교 의학) to the east, and Charlie Chaplin to the north.

Dates / Time
The lights are on everyday from 7pm - 11pm.
They end on the 8th of February.
